If you have ever thought about starting an online business you no doubt have heard of ‘Affiliate Marketing’. For newbies, it usually is the first online business option you hear about. So, what exactly is affiliate marketing anyway and is it an viable option for you?
Affiliate marketing is a marketing strategy whereby a merchant rewards one or more affiliates for each customer brought in by the affiliate’s marketing efforts. A merchant may will start an affiliate program and invite potential partners (the affiliates) to promote their product or services in return for a commission on the sale. These commission range widely from 20% to as high as 90%. Basically, the merchant is using other the affiliates web sites and marketing efforts to drive potential customers to their own web site.
By using an affiliate marketing strategy the merchant can keep marketing costs and effort low while potentially exposing their products and services to a much broader market than on their own. Additionally, the merchant benefits by potential repeat customers and by customer recommendations to other consumers who may need a similar product or service. The benefits to the affiliate are several. The first is that you do not need to have a product or service of your own. You are promoting the product of your affiliate partner. Whether it is a service or a physical or digital copy product you do not have to invest the time, money and effort in it’s research, design and development.
The second major benefit of affiliate marketing is that you do not have to be concerned about customer service. The business with which you have affiliated is responsible for all the customer service issues like providing refunds, handling services requests and complaints. You, as the affiliate, can focus all your efforts on how best to promote the affiliate product or service.
Another benefit of affiliate marketing is that most quality products will come ready with promotional materials like landing pages, sales copy, banners, graphics and even suggested email text that you can use in promoting the product. These are usually available on an affiliate web site where you can also track your affiliate commissions. This saves you the time and effort to develop these materials and also allows you to begin your promotion efforts quickly and easily.
So, let’s look at an example. Bill produces a super widget that revolutionizes blogging. He wants to corner his market quickly so he decides to implement an affiliate marketing program. John, checks out Bill’s widget and thinks it is the greatest thing since sliced bread. Bill’s offers to pay John 50% of each sale (the commission) of his widget referred by John. John agrees and has become Bill’s affiliate marketer.
Bill provides John with an affiliate ID that uniquely identifies all referrals sent to Bill through John’s marketing efforts. John gets to work and writes a review about Bill’s widget on his blog with a link to a sales page. He also mentions it on his web site with a link to the same sales page. He even has links to the sales page in his emails. The next thing you know, prospects are clicking on the various links to John’s sales page and decide they want this new widget. They click on the links and are taken to Bill’s order page. Every time this happens John’s affiliate ID is automatically brought along so that Bill will know this is John’s referral. If the prospect ends up buying the widget, John gets credit and 50% of the sale! It is that simple.
Sounds good, right? You want to get started, right? Then your first challenge in affiliate marketing is to find a good product to promote. Unfortunately, there are literally thousands of such products on the internet and you need to take the time and effort to research them. It is a good idea to promote products in your niche or area of expertise. It is easier to market products and services with which you are familiar. If your niche is dog training and your affiliate product is an ebook on curing acne, don’t expect to make much money. People don’t look for acne cures on dog training web sites or blogs.
Also, some very good products are not good candidates because that market is already saturated with affiliates. You can do some simple Google searches to get an idea if a product is being over-promoted. If you still want to promote such a product, you may have success if you already have a high traffic site or blog or if you devise a clever and unique way to promote the product. In general, the less competition you have the better your chances to make money.
It is always a good idea to review the product by actually purchasing it and trying it out for yourself. It is easier and more fun to promote a product in which you believe than trying to push a shoddy product on unsuspecting buyers. In general, maintaining an ethical approach to your online dealings is always the best policy. If your referral is dissatisfied in the product you promoted, you will be limiting the potential for repeat customers in the future. They won’t come back and they may tell others of their negative experience.
You can find many quality products at ClickBank. You can register quickly for free ClickBank account and you will have access to their market place of thousands of digital products you can start promoting. Because ClickBank is so popular it may take time to find a product or products that have not been over-promoted. Check often for new product releases that you can get in on before the rush.
There are many things to consider when starting an affiliate relationship. Is the product you are considering in a viable niche? Is the market over-promoted? Be sure you are very familiar with the affiliate program in which you are interested. Do you understand the product you are promoting? Do you understand the compensation plan and how you will be paid? What, if any, support services are provided to affiliates by the merchant? Make sure you understand the plan before you expend your efforts marketing the product.
Affiliate marketing can be win-win-win situation for all parties involved. If you can refer propects to a merchant with quality product they need everyone wins; the prospect, the merchant and you!
